When starting off in the world of competition shooting, it can be daunting to make sense of all the variants on competition rigs out there. (For starters, a “rig” commonly refers to a combination of holster, belt and magazine pouches.)
By all means, start with your carry setup (as far as the rules allow). The beginner sport shooter will definitely not be held back by his gear. But remember why you are competing: You want to enjoy your day out as much as you want to improve your skill, and the correct gear lets you focus on the shooting.
The Ghost Hybrid Holster and Hybrid Magazine Pouch is the ideal magazine holster/pouch combination to start off your competition journey. This holster and mag pouch, along with Ghost’s Carbon belt, will give you access to quality products at a good price.
Ghost’s Hybrid Holster is a personal favorite. This Kydex holster bolts to your competition belt and is fully adjustable for retention, allowing the holster to keep your firearm firmly in place when running. The low-riding design positions your firearm grip in an intuitive position, allowing for fast drawing under stress. Weighing up the difference between the Ghost Hybrid and its older brother, the Ghost Thunder, you will find that the Thunder has the added advantage of being adjustable for the angle of the holster body. This is achieved by attaching a Kydex body to an aluminum hanger.
The Ghost Hybrid Magazine Pouch features a rotating attachment that bolts permanently to your competition belt while allowing you to adjust the angle of every pouch to ensure a smooth draw wherever it is positioned on the belt. Included are plastic retention springs that allow the pouch to be adjusted for your specific magazine type, accommodating basically any double-stack magazine. When compared to the Ghost 360 Mag Pouch, the cost of the Hybrid Pouch is kept down by not including another - bullets outwards - pouch body and omitting the 360’s plastic adjustment screws. These screws are located on the sides of the pouch to remove play from different magazines.
Now that you have your holster and magazine pouch, you will require a rigid competition belt. Ghost offers the Carbon Belt. It is made up of an inner and outer sleeve. The inner belt can be looped through your regular belt loops, the outer is then attached to the inner with Velcro. Featuring Cordura construction, a nylon-based fabric that is often used by the military, this belt will not fail you.
Part of your competition shooting journey is trying out different setups to see what works, and what does not work for you. With time you may update your setup as you progress in your shooting discipline, or to a new pistol, but at the price, you won’t regret starting the journey with a Ghost Hybrid rig.
